Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a parent-implemented Early Start Denver Model(P-ESDM) for children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD) using direct observation scale and various parent-report questionnaires. Twenty eight parents of children(aged 21~54 months) with ASD were recruited and assigned to one of two groups: parent education + parent personal training and parent education + therapist intervention. They participated in the 12-week P-ESDM training program. Before and after the P-ESDM training, direct observations of parent-child interactions and parent-report questionnaires(child: behavioral and emotional problems, adaptive behavior, ASD symptoms; parent: parenting stress, maternal self-efficacy, and depression) were administered and compared. According to the results, parent-child interactive behaviors showed a significant increase with no effect of group assignment. No significant differences were observed in both groups in the parent-report questionnaires. These results imply that the low-intensity ESDM-based parent training with practice component could be effective on the parent-child interaction without therapist¡¯s additional intervention. Further implications and limitations of the current study, and directions for future research are discussed.
